Transitions are challenging. That goes without saying. Maybe you're moving to a new city, changing jobs, going through a divorce, or retiring. Or maybe you're getting married or buying a house. No matter what, changes require adjustment.
The scope of the adjustment matches the significance of the transition you're navigating. Yet any transition, regardless of its size, calls for a different perspective as you evolve to meet the changes and new challenges. Your way of life or how you relate to your world might alter accordingly.
So, transitional activities help prepare you to move from one place to the next.
I'd like to share six activities that will facilitate your progression as you go through transitions.
The energy of ending is necessarily different from the energy associated with beginning. Marking both with a short ritual will help you journey from your former way of life to the one that awaits you.
These rituals can be linked and performed together, or separated by time and space. For example, if you are leaving your home, your CLOSING RITUAL might be to enter each empty space and allow its memories to flow through you. Taking photos of the rooms can also help.
When moving to a new space, your WELCOMING RITUAL might include greeting it with a smudge ceremony to clear the energy for your arrival. Native Americans burn sage, while other traditions ignite some form of incense. You can then light a candle in each room.
Welcoming rituals include creating a space in your psyche for the new. They can also include PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES such as visualizing yourself entering your new life, marking the transition with a special meal, or writing a letter that speaks to the importance of this change. Your rites of passage can
be solitary or shared with significant people in your life.
Since new transitions can include loss of balance and focus, it is helpful to develop GROUNDING ACTIVITIES as touchstones. These can be repeated as needed. For example, preparing for the future is grounding. You might design templates you can follow, or obtain materials you need to help with your transition. In these ways, you create paths for your energies and your actions to follow.
FOCUS ACTIVITIES and STRESS REDUCTION PRACTICES can also contribute to your successful adjustment to your new life.
Focus activities help you direct your attention where it's needed the most. What activities recede as you enter this new phase of your life? Which assume central importance? Notice and record. Establishing daily routines, developing schedules and preparing lists and templates all aid in maintaining your focus.
Stress reduction practices enhance your flexibility and resilience. Remember to eat well. Get enough sleep, journal, and meditate. Engage in exercises that restore your vitality, and give yourself positive affirmations.
However tumultuous your transition may be, you can use these tools to make the most of your time as you enter this new phase of your life.
